You did a good summary of my thoughts on Non-VR. My experiences with the hard mode Plush Baby and Vent Repair Ennard completely mirror yours, and I agree that the Non-VR works well in the original games and, to an extent, Night Terrors.
You have to find a mod for it. And, I just say this because the word hack gets misused by the internet, it's more of a modification/mod than a hack by definition. You need to find a mod for unreal engine that displays everything in Unreal Engine's "Unlit" mode, not sure where a safe place to get it is or what terms people use for it.
